These needle and hook crafts can be used to create blankets, clothing, table cloths and even curtains. Knitting and crochet have now found their way into street art, as yarn graffiti.

Yarn Bombing creates Colorful Shrapnel

Crochet and knit graffiti is sometimes known as “yarn bombing”. The craft street artist will most often create their piece in the quiet of their own homes, before constructing the art work on its intended surface. Yarn graffiti is not limited to any one surface. It has been found on trees, hand rails, fences and hanging from bridges.

Grandma’s Tree Cozy

One of the more well-known yarn designs is a crochet tea cozy. These are essentially a woolen covering that is placed over a hot tea pot to keep it warm. In the images below, a similar covering has been created to cover these trees in a public park, transforming an ordinary public space into a fantastic wonderland.

Yarn Bombed Statues

Statues appear to be one of the favorite subjects for crochet and knit artists to graffiti. These life -like representations of the human form make a perfect base for a statement, and crafters will often either dress them in crochet items in much the same way that a living person would wear crochet clothing, or pose a crafted creature with the statue. Unlike paint graffiti, these street art works don’t vandalize or damage property. The crochet art can simply be cut away and discarded.

Barbed Wire and Doilies

Fences make ideal canvases for crochet and knit graffiti artists. These structures have plenty of places where a yarn artist can attach their crafted street art. Crochet seems to be the yarn bomber’s choice of craft for fence decoration, as it is easy to make flowers, birds, butterflies and other decorative elements in crochet.

Ever been told, “Have a heart”? Well, you can have as many as you want, with these anatomical tattoos of the human body, which ironically, are tattooed on the human body.

Inside Out Tattoo Designs

Anatomical tattoos are visual representations of the inside of the human body, whether it be bones, muscle or internal organs. Often, anatomy tattoos are placed to create an X-ray effect, showing the parts of the body that lie directly beneath the body art design. The inside out tattoo design below shows the muscles of the arm, as though the skin has been torn away from that area.

Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated masterpiece, The Mona Lisa, has fascinated art lovers for centuries. It is said that her eyes follow you around the room, and that her smile has a hundred meanings. The subject of this famous painting has found her way into dozens of fan art works.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa, also known as Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, is a portrait painted by Italian artists Leonardo da Vinci. The portrait is small, about the size of an A4 page, yet it took over a decade to complete. Da Vinci worked on the image between 1503-1519. All use chewing or bubble gum as the art medium, but some are a combination of found art and paint, whereas others are planned ahead of time.

Chewing Gum Pavement Art

Chewing gum is found on pavements all over the world. Once chewed, the gum is spat out and stepped on by pedestrians. This process leaves behind a flattened piece of chewing gum that provides the perfect canvas for gum artists. The photo series below shows Ben Wilson, chewing gum artist, at work. He carefully paints each piece of chewing gum with tiny brushes and bright colors, creating a miniature masterpiece that is both fun and psychedelic. This form of street art verges on reverse graffiti; the art of turning the city’s dirt into something attractive.

Recycling Food as an Art Form

Canadian gum artist Jason Kronenwald doesn’t chew bubble gum himself unless he has to. Instead of chewing the gum himself, he has a dedicated team of chewers. Kronenwald’s art is referred to as Gum Blondes, and are portraits of celebrities rendered in chewing gum.  The soft, chewed gum hardens as it dries, and has a shiny finish to it. Kronenwald’s celebrity fan art portraits include Madonna, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Marilyn Monroe and Jessica Simpson.

Recycling bubble gum and chewing gum as art is thought of as being a “green” or “eco-friendly” practice, because the gum isn’t thrown away after being chewed.
